Elise Bal - Product Manager
Applied Science

Elise joined Roche Diagnostics in 1999 in the Netherlands, where she worked for four years in sales and marketing in the Molecular Diagnostics and Applied Science Division.
She moved to New Zealand in 2003 and started with RDNZ as the product manager for Molecular Diagnostics.
She has a MSc degree in molecular biology and has worked in the Tropical Institute in Amsterdam before taking up an account manager’s position back in 1994.
Elise enjoys travelling around NZ both for work as well as during holidays. She likes tramping, windsurfing, tennis and photography in her spare time.

Anthony Thrush - System Specialist


Anthony has been with the Applied Science team since mid 2005 as an Account Manager/Application Specialist and is now in the role of System Specialist. Previously Anthony worked in science research companies for ten years as a molecular biologist and came to Roche with a wide range of laboratory experience. He looks forward to helping you find solutions for your laboratory needs and providing technical assistance for your reagents and instruments whenever needed. Outside of work he is an active outdoors and sports person and recently became the father of twins.

Paul Donohoe - Account Manager / Application Specialist


Paul is the Account Manager / Applications Specialist for the Roche Applied Science accounts in the South Island and Wellington
After spending time in molecular biology and neuroscience labs in Cambridge, London and San Francisco, he moved to NZ to take up a lectureship at the University of Otago in 2003. Paul moved to the commercial sector in 2007 and joined Roche Diagnostics in January 2008.
Away from work, Paul enjoys fly-fishing and has been involved in conservation work as a trustee of the Yellow-eyed Penguin Trust since 2003.

Paula Jones
- Account Manager / Application Specialist

Paula joined the Roche Diagnostics team in February 2007 and is an Account Manager and Applications Specialist for Applied Science accounts. She will be looking after North Island customers from Auckland to Palmerston North. Paula has an MSc (hons) degree in molecular genetics and has worked at Genesis Research and Development Ltd as a molecular biologist and as a Science Advisor with the Environmental Risk Management Authority (ERMA New Zealand). Paula enjoys indoor netball and tennis in her spare time and spends her winter weekends snowboarding at Mt Ruapehu.

Jennifer Barnes - Application and Product Specialist (Molecular Diagnostics)


Jen is the Application and Product Specialist for Molecular Diagnostic accounts. After completing her masters in the United States, she worked in several research laboratories focusing on infectious diseases. Upon moving to New Zealand in 2001, she worked in the molecular biology and virology departments at Health Waikato for two years, where she used the Cobas AMPLICOR and the LightCycler for clinical testing and was involved in development work for new real-time PCR assays. Since her time at Roche, she has continued to work in applications involving real-time PCR and automated nucleic acid preparation (among others) and has developed a number of novel assays based on these platforms.
In her spare time, Jen enjoys outdoor activities such as tramping and kayaking and also loves to cook and read.

Fabrice Merien – Application Specialist (Molecular Diagnostics)

Fabrice started in November 2006 as an Applications Specialist for Molecular Diagnostics and as such supports diagnostic labs for Applied Science products.  He moved here from New Caledonia and has a Degree in Veterinary Medicine as well as a Ph.D. in Microbiology.
He has worked the last 14 years as a scientist with the International Network of Institut Pasteur, including three years in French Guiana and 11 years in New Caledonia.
Outside of work, Fabrice enjoys hiking and visiting cultural and historical places.

Janice Homan
- Marketing Co-ordinator

Janice is the marketing Co-ordinator for Laboratory Systems and Aplied Science. Her role includes updating the local Roche Applied Science website, organising promotions and the LightCycler User Group to name a few.

In her spare time Janice enjoys walking and reading.

Deborah de Vere - Customer Service


Deb joined the Roche customer services team in Oct 2000 for Clinical Chemistry and now covers Applied Science & Clinical Chemistry/Immunology in the North Island.

Deborah's interests include a longstanding love affair with contemporary New Zealand art. She is also a keen collector of Viennese porcelain and has a passion for the visual and performing arts.

- Customer Service

Leanne joined the customer service team in May 2009. She looks after our South Island customers and some North Island ones too. In her spare time Leanne enjoys travelling, socialising with friends attending concerts and eating out.
